The golden rule

An expense is allowable if it is "wholly and exclusively" for business purposes. If something has both personal and business use (like your phone), you can only claim the business proportion.

MethodHow it worksBest for
Simplified expenses£10/month (25-50 hrs), £18/month (51-100 hrs), £26/month (101+ hrs)Easy calculation, no receipts needed for home costs
Actual costsCalculate business proportion of rent/mortgage interest, utilities, council tax, broadbandDedicated home office room, higher costs
💡 Example: If you work from home 40 hours/week, that's over 160 hours/month → £26/month = £312/year using simplified expenses. If your actual home costs are high and you have a dedicated room, the actual costs method might give you £600-£1,200/year.
