HMRC MTD Sign Up Problems? 8 Common Issues and How to Fix Them

Thousands of sole traders are hitting walls trying to register for Making Tax Digital. Here's what's going wrong — and how to fix each issue.

⏰ MTD starts 6 April 2026 — if you earn over £50k, you should be signing up NOW. Don't leave it to the last week.

HMRC's MTD sign-up process should be straightforward. In practice, it's anything but. From mismatched Government Gateway accounts to confusing eligibility messages, sole traders across the UK are struggling to get registered.

Here are the 8 most common problems — and exactly how to fix each one.

Before You Start — What You Need Ready

The 8 Most Common MTD Sign-Up Problems

PROBLEM #1

"You're not eligible for Making Tax Digital"

You try to sign up and HMRC says you're not eligible — even though you know your income is over £50,000.

✅ Fix:
  1. Check your latest filed tax return — HMRC uses the most recent SA103 figures. If your 2024/25 return isn't filed yet, they may be looking at 2023/24.
  2. Make sure you're checking gross income, not profit. The £50k threshold is based on qualifying income (self-employment + property income combined).
  3. If your return shows income over £50k and you're still getting this message, your Government Gateway account may not be linked to your self assessment record (see Problem #2).
PROBLEM #2

Government Gateway account not linked to self assessment

This is the single most common issue. You may have multiple Government Gateway accounts, or your account was set up for a different tax service (like PAYE).

✅ Fix:
  1. Sign in to your personal tax account
  2. Check if self assessment appears in your services. If not, you need to add self assessment to this Government Gateway account.
  3. You'll need your UTR to link it. Go to "Add a tax" → "Self Assessment" → enter your UTR.
  4. HMRC may send an activation code by post (takes 7–10 days). Don't wait until March to do this.
PROBLEM #3

Using a business tax account instead of personal

Sole traders must sign up through their personal Government Gateway account, not a business one. If you set up a business account for VAT or CIS, that's the wrong one for MTD ITSA.

✅ Fix:
  1. Sign out completely
  2. Sign back in with your personal Government Gateway credentials (the ones linked to your self assessment)
  3. If you can't remember which is which, look at the dashboard — a personal account shows self assessment, whereas a business account shows VAT/corporation tax
PROBLEM #4

Outstanding tax returns blocking sign-up

HMRC won't let you sign up for MTD if you have unfiled self assessment tax returns. This catches a lot of people who are behind on their returns.

✅ Fix:
  1. File any outstanding tax returns first — even if they're late
  2. Pay any penalties or arrange a payment plan
  3. Wait 72 hours after filing for HMRC's systems to update
  4. Then try MTD sign-up again

PROBLEM #5

Sign-up page loading errors or timeouts

HMRC's online services are under heavy load as the April deadline approaches. Pages may time out, throw errors, or simply not load.

✅ Fix:
  1. Try early morning (before 9am) or evening (after 7pm) — lowest traffic times
  2. Clear your browser cache and cookies for the gov.uk domain
  3. Try a different browser (Chrome, Firefox, Edge)
  4. Don't use a VPN — HMRC sometimes blocks VPN traffic
  5. If it persists for more than 24 hours, check HMRC's service status page
PROBLEM #6

"You've already signed up" — but you haven't used it

You may have signed up for a previous MTD pilot or for MTD VAT, and the system thinks you're already registered.

✅ Fix:
  1. Check if you're signed up for MTD VAT (different from MTD ITSA)
  2. If you joined the voluntary MTD ITSA pilot previously, you may already be signed up — check your HMRC online account for an "MTD for Income Tax" section
  3. If genuinely confused, call HMRC's MTD helpline: 0300 200 3600
PROBLEM #7

Software authorisation failing

After signing up, you need to authorise your MTD software to access your HMRC data. This step fails for many people.

✅ Fix:
  1. Make sure you're authorising with the same Government Gateway account you used to sign up for MTD
  2. Some software requires you to complete sign-up before attempting authorisation — don't try to do both simultaneously
  3. Allow pop-ups for your software provider's website (some authorisation flows use pop-up windows)
  4. If using free software like HMRC's own tool, make sure you're on the correct version (MTD ITSA, not MTD VAT)
PROBLEM #8

Agent/accountant can't sign you up

Your accountant is trying to sign you up through their agent services account but keeps getting errors.

✅ Fix:
  1. Your accountant needs an agent services account (separate from their normal HMRC agent account)
  2. They must have MTD authorisation from you — a standard 64-8 form isn't enough for MTD
  3. Ask your accountant to create a new digital authorisation request through their agent services dashboard
  4. You'll receive a link to approve the request — do this promptly as authorisation links expire
